Part 3: Homo Techno

Posted By Randall D. Isaac, Thursday, February 2, 2023

In Part 3, Lightman talks about how far technology may take us in the future. What will guide us in ethics and values? Is there something more than atoms and molecules that is necessary to enable consciousness?

In conclusion, Lightman declares that he does not believe in cosmic meaning but that each of us must find our own meaning. What is your opinion? What do you feel is the source of meaning in your existence?

Part 2: The Big & The Small

Posted By Randall D. Isaac, Thursday, February 2, 2023

In Part 2, Lightman pursues the question of consciousness. In particular, he devotes the second half of the program to a conversation with Bina48, a robot introduced in 2010 with various updates since then. This raises the question of whether we would recognize emergent consciousness if we saw it, and what consciousness really is.

What is your opinion?

In Part 1, Alan Lightman describes his transcendental-like experience as he gazes at the stars and sees an osprey. He raises intriguing questions about whether atoms and molecules are all there is. But he answers his own question with a resounding yes while giving scant rationale and gives little space for alternative views.

SEARCHING: Our Quest for Meaning in the Age of Science

Posted By Randall D. Isaac, Wednesday, January 11, 2023
Updated: Thursday, February 2, 2023

Alan Lightman of MIT is hosting a series of TV episodes, funded by the John Templeton Foundation, entitled "SEARCHING: Our Quest for Meaning in the Age of Science." As the attached article in Science magazine portrays, he raises questions about meaning in the light of modern science. While he asserts a materialistic position, he primarily raises important questions with little in-depth discussion.

In this ASA blog, we encourage ASA members to comment and carry on a dialog about perspectives that Christians in the sciences may have.

The Series can be seen in its entirety at bb. Local PBS stations will be airing the series throughout January and February.
