Part 2: The Big & The Small

Posted By Randall D. Isaac, Thursday, February 2, 2023

In Part 2, Lightman pursues the question of consciousness. In particular, he devotes the second half of the program to a conversation with Bina48, a robot introduced in 2010 with various updates since then. This raises the question of whether we would recognize emergent consciousness if we saw it, and what consciousness really is.

What is your opinion?

Bina48 appears to be a computerized model of someone, which responds to input stimuli in a manner similar to that of the individual being modelled. I find it difficult to associate consciousness with Bina48 or with any other computerized models. As our understanding of human consciousness grows, so presumably could our robotic modelling of it. However, that doesn’t mean that such robots achieve actual consciousness, but only an improved model of consciousness. To me it is important to distinguish a model of consciousness (‘machine consciousness’) from consciousness itself (which I also refer to as ‘spiritual consciousness’). In my personal Christian worldview, I believe the step going from inanimate to alive would have to be God’s action, not ours – not that it would be unethical for us to do it, but rather that we simply cannot do it, since it involves action from outside of our physical universe.
