Speaker:  Keith Miller  (ASA Fellow and Retired Research Assistant Professor of Geology at Kansas State University)

Title of Presentation:  “Understanding Evolution: Addressing Common Misconceptions about Evolutionary Science”

Description of Presentation:

This foundational lecture will meticulously distinguish the scientific theory of evolution from philosophical naturalism, which rejects the existence of supernatural agents and their action in the natural world. It will correct misconceptions about the nature of scientific theories, addressing the problem of dismissing evolution as “only a theory.” It will also address some of the common false views of evolution, such as the idea that humans evolved from monkeys, that transitional fossils do not exist, and that individual organisms evolve up a ladder. The “God of the gaps” view and its negative consequences for religious faith will be discussed. The goal of this presentation is to clarify what evolution is scientifically, and what it is not philosophically, setting the stage for deeper theological integration.
