Our Amazing Universe:  New Discoveries and Ancient Reflections
Recent advances in astronomy from observatories like Hubble, Webb, and radio telescope arrays are revealing a dynamic universe filled with massive galaxies, beautiful star-forming nebulae, black holes, and even planetary systems around other stars.  The universe also hosts mysteries of dark matter, dark energy, and the possibility of life beyond earth.   These discoveries inspire wonder and awe.  They also fertilize questions:   How has the universe changed over time?  How will humans respond to the detection of even simple life beyond Earth?  Is space exploration just, inclusive, and justified?  What is the place and significance of human life in this vast, dynamic Cosmos? How do faith communities and theology engage with space exploration and discoveries?  This talk and discussion will stimulate curiosity and reflection on our amazing universe.

Bio:  Dr. Jennifer Wiseman is an astrophysicist, author, and speaker.  She studies the process of star and planet formation in our galaxy using radio, optical, and infrared telescopes.    She is also interested in national science policy and public science engagement.   She served as a Congressional Science Fellow for the American Physical Society and is the Director Emeritus of the program of Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion (DoSER) for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).  Dr. Wiseman studied physics at MIT, co-discovering comet Wiseman-Skiff in 1987, and continued in astronomy with her doctoral research at Harvard.   She has worked with several international observatories and is currently a senior astrophysicist at the Goddard Space Flight Center, serving as the senior project scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope.  Dr. Wiseman is a Fellow of the American Scientific Affiliation, a network of Christians in Science.   She frequently gives public talks on the excitement of scientific discovery.
