Be sure to join us for our next Rocky Mountain ASA chapter online event: “Plastics in the Food Chain: A Christian Response” with conservation ecologist, Brittany (Ederer) Michalski of A Rocha USA.  Our event will be hosted by Angela Kantola, our faithful servant and a dedicated environmentalist. You are eating plastic, but does it matter? To your health? To God? Plastic pollution affects God’s creation at multiple scales, from microscopic to landscape and ocean-wide effects, including the agricultural, aquacultural, and fisheries systems we rely on for livelihoods and our daily “bread.” Brittany will discuss the practical, theological, and scientific implications for daily Christian life. She'll also give a brief overview of the Christian conservation organization, A Rocha USA, which works to restore people and places through biodiversity conservation and ecological action. Brittany has an M.S. in Environmental Conservation and a B.S. in Wildlife Ecology, both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Brittany and Robert Sluka's article "Plastics in the Food Chain" appeared in the September 2020 issue of Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith; participants are encouraged to read the article in advance. If you'd like further background on plastic pollution, see the documentaries "The Story of Plastic" (2020, available on Amazon) and A Plastic Ocean (2017, available on Amazon and Netflix). Coloradans may be interested in checking out recently enacted legislation (SB20-055 Incentivize Recycling End Markets, intended to grow recycling programs by addressing the lack of local end markets for recyclable materials in Colorado) and introduced legislation (HB21-1162, Management of Plastic Products).
