ASA will host a retreat for underrepresented graduate students, postdocs, & early career individuals prior to the 2025 ASA Annual Meeting. (Medical students and residents are included.) Find community, explore what it means to be the whole of yourself in your scientific work, and connect your experience in your field with your faith in Christ.

Facilitators

Christina J. Cross is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Harvard University. Her research examines the family’s role in shaping individuals’ life chances and how its impact differs by their structural position in society. Her forthcoming book, with Harvard University Press, reveals the hidden inequalities that exist between children who grow up in two-parent families and what we can do to better support equality of opportunity for the next generation. Her research been supported by organizations including the Russell Sage Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, the National Science Foundation, and the Ford Foundation, and it has received awards from leading sociological, demographic, and family science organizations. Cross holds a PhD in Public Policy and Sociology from the University of Michigan.

Denise-Margaret Thompson led the 2024 retreat and is advising the 2025 & 2026 retreats. She will not be able to attend the 2025 retreat in person due to other leadership commitments, but she is active in growing community connections and followup opportunities for retreat participants.

Hannah Eagleson will provide logistical support and connections to other ASA early career programming.

We’ll feature a panel of experienced Christians in science, small groups to help you connect your working life and your experience of faith, and an early career lunch to connect and celebrate.

All are welcome to the InterVarsity Reception/Ice Cream Social! Join us after the State of the ASA to celebrate what God is doing this year. We’ll give a brief update on InterVarsity’s work with grad students and faculty, feature some fun guests, and give you a chance to connect with Christians in and interested in science.

We know that money can be tight for students. The ASA would like to help make your attendance at ASA 2025 a possibility. Thanks to generous donations from ASA members, we are able to offer limited scholarships to ASA student members. Registration for student members is FREE (a $295 value).

• Scholarship awards will cover 50% of meals and lodging (double occupancy, shared bath).
• If the student is presenting either a poster or oral presentation, the award increases to cover 75% of meals and lodging.
• Students who plan to make an poster or oral presentation should not apply for the scholarship until after an abstract acceptance is received. (Scholarship award decisions will not be made until after March 15, 2025, which is after the abstract submission deadline.)
• Students traveling from outside of the US or Canada are eligible for scholarship awards for 100% of meals and lodging. Please note the country you are traveling from on your scholarship application in your comments.

Important Notes:

• Please join the ASA as a student member if you wish to apply for scholarships. This allows us to grant scholarships within the technical infrastructure of our registration system.

To be considered for a scholarship, you must

• Be a student ASA member. To become a member, complete the online membership application.
• Be an undergraduate or graduate student, a postdoc, or early career individual (less than 3 years since graduation).
• Complete all information on the application form.
• Plan to participate in the entire meeting, including the Student/Early Career Track and the State of the ASA meeting.
• Apply by June 16, 2025.

Not an ASA student member? No problem! Annual membership is FREE for students (a $99 value). Benefits of membership include, access to our online journal, Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith, and networking opportunities at local chapter meetings.

Students are invited to deliver academic talks and poster sessions at ASA annual meetings.

We invite meeting student registrants to contribute oral or poster presentations to traditional parallel session tracks for a poster presentation on a range of topics at the intersection of science and faith. You may propose an abstract one of the following:

• An Oral Presentation: this is a 20-minute presentation (plus 5-minute Q&A) on a topic of importance to the science-faith dialogue.
• A Poster Presentation: this is a conference-style poster for viewing; it should include scientific data and analysis as well as some discussion about its theological significance.

Students may either include theological reflection in their poster or bring a poster they have already created (e.g., for a secular conference) and develop theological connections in conversation at the conference.

This year, graduate and undergraduate students submitting posters will be entered into the student poster contest.

Posters will be judged on the following criteria:

• Overall Clarity of Presentation: Visual interest, Readability, Balance between text and visuals, Title, Authors, etc.
• Elements and Flow: Title and authors, Statement of purpose and significance, Description of research
• Quality of Research: Key references to support findings/conclusions
• Graphs and Data presentation: Do they support the conclusions? Are they readable and clear?
