In January of 2023, the ASA Board of Directors voted to increase membership dues for the first time in ten years. The changes will be effective for fiscal year 2024, beginning April 3, 2023.
These changes were made based on the recommendations of the ASA Membership Committee which carried out a careful analysis of costs and trends among similar organizations. Dues represent only 18% of ASA revenue with fundraising making up the majority of revenue. In sharp contrast to other organizations, the ASA has not increased dues in a decade. The ASA has continued to offer most of our programming for free or on a donation basis which means as programming has increased, the portion covered by membership dues has continued to decrease. The decision to increase member dues is also reflective of the increasing value the ASA is providing through organizational growth in staff and service to members.
The analysis of similar organizations found that due to the increasing costs of paper, postage, and labor, most have moved to charging for paper copies of their journals. A portion of the ASA dues increase is tied to the actual printing and postage cost of the journal. If a member opts out of receiving a print copy of PSCF, membership dues will be decreased by $15.

What do I need to do? If you are a regular, associate, or retired member, including Fellows, please be sure to log into your membership profile and confirm “yes” or “no” in the field “Mail Printed PSCF.” If you choose YES, you will receive a print copy of the journal. If you choose NO, you will not receive a print copy, but you will still have access to the electronic version of PSCF from our website under publications. As an example, a regular member, associate member, or regular Fellow who wants a print copy of PSCF will be charged $114. Members in those categories who opt out of a print copy will be charged $99. A retired member or retired Fellow who wants a print copy of PSCF will be charged $70. Members in those categories who opt out of a print copy will be charged $55.
