TRAVEL & TOURISM
Travel Information for our 2022 Annual Meeting
General Location Information
The campus of PLNU is beautiful, with one side near Sunset Cliffs Park and the Pacific Ocean. On the other side, there are two yacht clubs on the bay (1.4 miles) and Shoreline Park. It has "America’s Most Scenic Ballpark," according to MLB.
The PLNU website includes a clickable map with 360˚ videos (you can pan the YouTube videos around by swiping on them while watching), and an extensive photo collection.
Local Weather
Summertime in San Diego is usually warm but not hot (average high of 76°F / 24°C) and dry (see the 10-Day Forecast here) with cool evenings (average low of 67°F / 19°C - Hourly Forecast), so it's best to bring a jacket. (See also the forecast at The Weather Network, 7 Day and Hourly.)
Current Conditions
SAN DIEGO WEATHERTraveling to San Diego
If you live in Western North America, please consider the benefits of ground travel. Details are below.
Train
Amtrak's system of routes (for California and beyond) brings travelers to LA's Union
Station (a tourist attraction)
and then to San Diego via Pacific Surfliner.
(Note: prospective
travelers may wish to consult recent reviews of this service.)
Relevant rail prices in May 2022:
- Santa Barbara to San Diego is "from $45" for Coach and "from $66" for Business (one-way).
- Los Angeles (Union Station) to San Diego is $35 (or $54). The trip takes two hours and forty minutes, with ten daily departure times.
- Anaheim to San Diego, $30 (or $44).
Additionally, there are departure locations (not just LA and Anaheim) between Santa Barbara and San Diego, and from other cities.
Amtrak has two stations in San Diego: Old Town Transportation Station (tourist info) and Santa Fe Depot (tourist info).
Bus
Bus rates are often cheaper if purchased in advance. For a one-way trip from Los Angeles to SD, purchased in May for July 28, Greyhound's website says "from $14," with trip times ranging from 2:40 to 3:55, and seven daily departure times (with five seeming to be reasonable).
Note: riding a bus can often be a good option, but for traveling to San Diego, ASA 2022 attendees may find the Pacific Surfliner to be a more scenic and attractive option. (See notes on rail travel above.)
Driving
PLNU campus is an easy one-day trip from Southern California (SoCal: Santa Barbara, LA, Inland Empire, Orange County). It takes a longer day's drive coming from the Bay Area, or Arizona; a very long one-day drive from Utah (or one might split it with a stay in Las Vegas) or two days from Denver (perhaps including Las Vegas) or Oregon (including Bay Area & SoCal). Coming from Seattle or Vancouver is two very long days of driving at best.
If you're thinking about driving to the conference, please see our Ride-Sharing options as soon as possible.
More generally, Google Maps is useful for planning a route, and GasBuddy has a helpful Trip Cost Calculator for both estimating the cost of fuel and locating the least expensive fill-up locations en route.
Flying
The best prices for air travel can often be determined using services such as Google Flights or Skyscanner.
Getting from SAN Airport to PLNU
- First, please take note of ASA's ride-sharing forums, which can be especially helpful for coordinating a shared ride from the airport.
- The distance from SAN to PLNU is about 4 miles.
- The website for San Diego International Airport (SAN) has links for Transportation (shuttles, rentals, taxis, public transit) and more. iFly also has links for Ground Transport.
- Although most locals say “just use Uber,” another option is to take public transit from SAN to PLNU, taking three buses (plus a little walking) in about 48 minutes, costing $6.00.
Getting from PLU to SAN Airport
At the conference, there will be a way to exchange information with other attendees about sharing rides back to SAN.
ASA Ride-Sharing Forums
There are two ASA travel forums. One is for drivers and riders generally, and the other is for sharing a ride from the airport. In order to use one of them, please click the corresponding below, and you can read posts. In order to write a post, read the forum's first post (about “how to post”), sign in (as a member of ASA, or register for free) and reply.
Driving to and from San Diego
If you're driving and you want to offer a ride (to share costs, and “begin the conference early” with conversations), or if you're looking for a ride, please visit the Driving to San Diego Forum for possibilities.
Note: posting in the Driving Forum ASAP is the best way to help others make their plans efficiently. For instance, if another attendee frequently checks the forum and discovers they can ride with you, they may do this instead of buying a ticket for a plane or train or bus. But if you post too late, this opportunity for savings, conversation, and making a new friend may be missed!
Riding to and from the Airport
The Airport Forum is useful either if you want to share a taxi ride to PLNU, or if you are driving (your own car or a rental) and you can offer a ride to PLNU.
