This is to invite all ASA colleagues to a Symposium on a timely topic, “The American Experiment: A Republic, If You Can Keep It," Hilton Pasadena, California, USA, 3-5 August 2017.  Call for Papers/Registration Form attached; also on JIS web:     Presenting a paper is not a prerequisite for participation since the focus is on discussion.  But, if you wish to present a paper, send a 250-word Abstract by: May 1, 2017, to:  Following the conference, fully-developed papers will be considered for publication in the Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies XXX 2018.    JIS Symposium 2017 is sponsored by the Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies: An International Journal of Interdisciplinary and Interfaith Dialogue, a refereed trilingual thematic annual.  We prefer papers that endeavor to connect with relevant ideas and articles published in the journal, which seeks synergy, synthesis, and cumulative knowledge–a “WisdomQuest.”     JIS Symposia attract some of the most creative interdisciplinary scholars from all over the world.  Our conferences feature an engaging seminar-style format ideal for discussion.  Participants enjoy a relaxed collegial atmosphere at a premier conference venue in the heart of Pasadena (within walking distance of famed Old Town).  Ease of travel is facilitated by regular shuttle services from LAX to Hilton Pasadena (ca. 45 min. drive).  In addition, Southern Cal offers a wonderful vacation and sightseeing.  For less expensive lodging, contact: Pasadena Convention & Visitors Bureau: 1-800-307-7977.  Please note that there are no travel grants: participants (or their institutions) are expected to pay all expenses, including a modest registration fee.  Official Letters of Invitation are sent out upon pre-registration.  We’d welcome your participation.     Feel free to share this info. via newsletter, web, listserve, blog, etc. Thank you for your cooperation. ICSA VIII: "The Future of Religion: Re-Enchantment of the World?" 0 O. Gruenwald CALL FOR PAPERS ICSA VIII. WORLD  CONGRESS THE  FUTURE  OF  RELIGION: RE - ENCHANTMENT  OF  THE  WORLD? HILTON  PASADENA,  CALIFORNIA,  USA,  22 - 23  JULY  2016 ____________________________________________________________________________________ Suggested  Themes:     John Paul II--philosopher-poet-Pope--forged a grand new synthesis unmatched since Thomas Aquinas’ Summa.  It is timely, then, to ask how and why John Paul’s vision of a new evangelization of culture may impact the Church and the world.  A scholar whose many encyclicals sought to make religion accessible and relevant to the modern world, John Paul combined the moral courage of the Russian Nobel-winning author Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn with a major French Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain’s personalism that emphasized human dignity and universal spiritual yearnings, bridging East and West.  Personal experience as a witness to Nazi and communist dictatorships in his native Poland sharpened his vision and prayer life, and contributed to his formation and pastoral calling rooted in Christian humanism.  But it was his friendly demeanor, approachable personality, openness to all seekers, and bearings under physical afflictions that appealed to all and made John Paul II everyone’s Pope across geographical and cultural divides, prompting the call for his sainthood (“santo subito”). The question, thus, arises: What are the prospects for John Paul’s quest for the evangelization of culture and the future of religion in a world that embraces a commercial ethos with highly atomized, self-referential individuals in a postmodern global society in search of common bonds?  Can such a world experience re-enchantment by rediscovering St. Paul’s cardinal virtues--faith, hope, and love--as the road energized by Christ’s promise of grace, mercy, and redemption?  __________________________________________________________________________________ ICSA VIII endeavors to bring together scholars from a wide range of disciplines and denominations for an exciting international conference which takes both scholarship and faith seriously.  ICSA VIII: The Future of Religion is co-sponsored by IIR-ICSA-JIS in the City of the Roses–the world-famous Tournament of Roses--in sunny Southern California, with many cultural & sightseeing opportunities. ASA Annual MTG Question: Is time for fellowship lacking? 1 E. Ruppel      You ask good questions, Emily.  As explained below, I think the ASA meetings are great as-is (as they have been) but if you can find ways to make them better, socially and spiritually, they will be even better!    Since 1990, I've been to 15 annual meetings of ASA, and they're my favorite conferences.  There are many reasons, but partly it's due to the structure -- arranged by ASA (thanks!) -- that encourages socializing: everyone eats meals together, and most of us stay at the same dorms.  This makes it easy, by contrast with other conferences where you must "hustle" and find a group to join for restaurants, and at night people are scattered at different hotels.    With ASA, usually at night there are one or two "social areas" for those who want to meet and talk. The locations depend on local geography: where are the evening events held, is there an obvious meeting area near it, do the dorms have a general lounge (on the first floor, open to all) that is a friendly meeting place, and so on.  If some areas are not obvious to all -- for example, if one dorm is closer to the evening events or it has a more people-friendly lounge, compared with other dorms, so it's a good meeting area but those living in other dorms won't know about it -- this information could be shared in "general announcements", especially early in the meeting, at the Thursday evening meal, then at plenary sessions Friday evening and Saturday.Craig Rusbult
